A desire for “Intimate Conversations”

I struggle in many areas of my life.

I struggle being a mom.
I struggle being a good mom.
I struggle being a wife.
But most of all I struggle being a child of God.

Just like all of us, I’m filled with doubt and longing at certain times. I never doubt that there is a God, but there are times when I start to doubt that God is listening to me or perhaps I doubt myself. More often than not I’m feeling a longing to be closer to God and feel his presence and love around me.

Recently, I was asked to review a book for the Revell MOPS Blog Tour.

“Intimate Conversations” by Alicia Britt Chole has been chosen as the MOPS theme devotional for this year.

The book includes 52 daily readings. Each reading not only includes a personal story/anecdote from Alicia but it also includes a section for discussion (if using it a group study) and journaling.

“Intimate Conversations” is broken into 12 different sections including:

“Dear God..I Ache to Know You More”
“Dear God..The Grass is Really Looking Greener”
“Dear God..Please Refresh My love for You”

I have really enjoyed having this book. I can relate to it and I have begun using it as my go-to source of inspiration. Most recently I read the section titled “Dear God..Why do I Feel so Unproductive.” The section discusses how we as moms sometimes feel like we are getting anything done because we have nothing to measure our day with. It’s not like an out of home job where you have someone reviewing your work and giving you accolades or criticism. We have no way to measure how well we are doing. There is one particular line in the reading “Building Muscle” that really stuck out to me. Alicia writes, “But when obedience leads us to decrease visibly – in what the world sees and applauds – that decrease creates unique opportunity to increase spiritually in what God sees and applauds.”

It just really made me remember that I shouldn’t be looking for kudo’s from those around me. I really need to think about if what I am doing will receive kudo’s from God.

If you are looking for a book that will give you a boost during your day when you don’t know if you are going to make it to nap time I highly recommend this book.  The daily readings are no more than 4 pages, which makes it easy to fit into your day.
“Intimate Conversations” is as of September 2009 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.
