Giving is Teaching

As mothers, we want our kids to grow up with compassion, a sense of thinking of others and of course a giving heart. I love to do projects with my kids that give them the opportunity to experience these things.

In the past we have adopted a family for Christmas, donated toys to our local domestic abuse shelter and they have even helped me cook meals for a family who was going through a hard time.

They are so young that it’s hard to see how much they get from these experiences but I do believe in leading by example, so I will continue to include the kids in what I do.

That’s why I was so excited when I was chosen to receive a Walmart gift card from Hersheys to build a #BetterBasket for charity. We chose to make three baskets total. Two of them will go to a local charity called the See Ya Later Foundation for their Seeds of Hope Program which help families who are dealing with a medical crisis whether its a child or parent. They provide not only support but also a time of fun when it’s needed.

Our third basket is going to the youngest daughter of a co-worker. My co-worker and his wife recently lost their oldest daughter to an uncommon brain disease. It has been a very rough transition for all of them and we wanted to do something special for a little girl who is still trying to understand all that has happened.

Anyway, with gift card in hand we headed out to our local Walmart to pick up all the provisions needed. Check out our Whrrl slide show to see just what we did. 🙂

  2. That is really sweet! Walmart is always goo for their great prices. We shop there pretty often. It seems like you got a lot of really great stuff. I’m sure the kids will be SUPER excited when they get these baskets!

  3. I agree whole heartedly with your post and what a great idea. We too teach our children the power of giving. We joined them in scouts which gives them a lot of opportunities for volunteering and this has given them a passion for their own charities.

Everyone thinks of people at Thanksgiving and Christmas when the power of giving is strong in our hearts but those same people need all year through. Thank you for the reminder and I’m headed to check out See Ya Later Foundation right now!
