The Hubs has been traveling a lot lately.
More so than we are used to and basically what this means is that there are no breaks for this mama.
It usually takes about 5 days before the incessant whining from the kids starts to get to me. It’s at that point that I realize that I start to look forward to bedtime so that I can relax and trade in the whine for some wine.
During his last trip I made it to day 5 and realized that I had no wine in the house to look forward to! This in my opinion was a travesty but I wasn’t going to load the kids up in the car just to head to the store for a bottle of wine. Perhaps if it wouldn’t have been so close to bedtime; okay, I obviously didn’t need a glass that badly or else I totally would have gone to the store. I started thinking about how great it would be to have wine delivered.
This thought led to many more that involved things being delivered to the house but I’ll save those ideas for another post.
I went to bed that night with visions of my favorite FedEx man showing up at my doorstep asking me to sign for wine and cheese.
The next day as we were getting ready to leave the house guess who should pull up. My favorite FedEx man. Now, at the time I didn’t know what was in the box that he was delivering. Ok, that’s not the truth. When a box comes with a big sticker on it that says “ALCOHOL: ADULT SIGNATURE REQUIRED – CHECK ID,” even I can figure out what is inside.
After soccer practice, homework, dinner, showers, and story time, it was finally time for the kids to hit the hay for the night. I opened my “ALCOHOL” box and let out a big ol’ exhale.
California Wine Club is owned by Bruce and Pam Boring. The idea behind it came from their own frustrations when trying to pick out good wine. There are so many labels out there, (just look at the wine aisle at your local grocery store,) that knowing which one to select was not just time consuming but also hit or miss. They found that instead of trying to guess which one would be good they just followed the recommendations of friends. And so California Wine Club was born, it’s just like “one friend recommending a great bottle of wine to another friend”.
I just recently acquired a taste for wine. The Hubs has been trying for YEARS and I kept resisting. It wasn’t until a recent conference I attended in Seattle that I finally decided to really give wine a try. Now it’s something I try to keep in the house not just for those times when the Hubs is gone but when we have guests over or the Hubs and I have a nice quiet evening to spend together.
Since I am so new to wine I have no idea what is a good wine, how much is too much to spend on wine, or really even what all that sniffing and swirling is about. The fact that I can have the guess work done for me by the California Wine Club AND have it delivered to my house is perfect.
In this shipment I received 2 bottles of 2009 Perry Creek Chardonnay.
*WARNING- If you haven’t figured it out yet, I am not a wine connoisseur. So I really have no idea what I’m talking about then it comes to wine.*
This was my first time trying a Chardonnay. I typically stick with Riesling or Moscato because they are sweeter wines. One of the things I have always had problems with is the super dry wines that seem to suck all the moisture out of my mouth.
The Chardonnay didn’t do that but it was drier than I am used to. The finish, (had to look up what that meant,) was a little rough for me. I do, however think that my palette is still very young when it comes to wine so with time this won’t be an issue.
I’m looking forward to my next shipment and trying something else out of my comfort zone. That’s probably what I love most about the club, I’m trying wines that I normally wouldn’t buy because I would be too scared. 🙂
If you’re looking for a great holiday gift for a close friend or family member I definitely recommend California Wine Club. There are 4 separate “clubs” you can choose from so you are sure to find one that is perfect for the recipient.
