Before I had kids Halloween was a huge event at my house.
I prided myself in having the most decked out house on our block. Kids would walk from several streets over just to check out the decorations we put up each year. One year I created a life sized scare-crow for the front porch and had him sit in a chair. Then I talked my mom into dressing up as the character from the Scream movies. She sat in a chair right next to my scare-crow. No one could tell which one was real and which was fake. My mom would quietly stand up and stand behind the older kids as they were getting their candy. We had so much fun scaring them. 🙂
Once I got pregnant I ended up selling most of my decorations because our focus shifted to taking our son out for the night.
Now that my kids are getting older I wanted to start decorating again and invite them to be a part of it. Thankfully, I was asked by Collective Bias to conduct a shopper insights study at Kmart.
I was super impressed with the amount of items that Kmart had available for Halloween, especially their costumes! Not only did they have a large area of floor space covered with costumes but there were also 2 other aisles. They also had a large selection of adult costumes which is always nice to see since my kids ask me to dress up but I can never find a suitable costume.
But our main focus for this shopping trip was to buy some decor based loosely on the Party Bluprints plan for a Halloween. I wanted to keep our decor somewhat simple and also wanted my kids to be involved. My daughter was my shopping companion for this trip. 🙂
It’s always a pleasant surprise to get to the store and see that their already low prices are discounted even more. There was so much to choose from that it took us a lot longer to get through everything than I thought it would. Even with just 2 aisles of decor it was enough for me. Plus, there was the fact that my daughter wanted to push every button on every thing that made noise or moved. It was actually a lot of fun to see her get so excited and I was surprised when she picked out a few things that I thought would be a bit too scary for her. Instead she just thought they were funny.
When all was said and done we ended up spending $150 on our Halloween decor. That was after we saved over $30 with coupons, plus we got 5x our points on our Kmart rewards card! I realize that this still might seem like a lot to spend but just take a look at our cart. It is full! We got everything we needed for outside and inside in one trip, which for me is super important when you have a kiddo in tow.
I want to quickly show you what we did in one afternoon.
This was our quick and simple table centerpiece. I wanted something simple because we use our table and didn’t want something that would cause the kids to get distracted when it was time to eat dinner. Although, I’m rethinking the whole candy idea. 🙂
If you need to pick up some Halloween goods be sure to check out Kmart. They have some great deals going on right now including 30% off Costumes ordered online (plus free shipping) and $5 off any costume accessory!
