As I mentioned in my last post about the California Wine Club, I am not a wine connoisseur.
I can’t tell you how great this gift has been for me to try out the club for 3 months. I have been more adventurous in my wine tastings mainly because trying out the wines they have picked for me has proved that wine isn’t as scary as I once thought it was.
This month I was sent the 2010 Gewürztraminer from Castoro Cellars in Paso Robles.
So, one of the other great things about the California Wine Club is with each shipment of wine you will receive an issue of “Uncorked,” a newsletter containing information about the winery that produces the months selections.
In addition to learning about the winery, you’ll also learn about when the fruit for the wine was planted and harvested, how long it was fermented, when it was bottled/released, and even when you should enjoy it. For instance the 2010 Gewürztraminer is best within one year. This is not going to be a problem for me since I plan on taking my second bottle to our Thanksgiving dinner.
Before even tasting the wine I had a feeling that I was going to thoroughly enjoy it just from reading the newsletter.
I prefer sweeter wines. The Gewürztraminer was put to rack and refrigerated after 8 weeks of fermentation. This leaves in some of the natural sweetness of the fruit used.
There were no bitter after notes like some other wines that I have tried in the past, just a smooth finish that left me wanting to take another sip.
I can’t wait to try out the next month’s selection which is going to be from Tulip Hill Winery.

I go for Sweet, sweet.. I LOVE Reislings. I Love Moselles. Tried “Ice Wine” once and swooned with delight.
I enjoy the sweeter wines – Amity Vineyards makes the best, by far! There’s also a winery in South Dakota called Prairie Berry Wine that makes some incredible fruit wines.
