SYNOPSIS: As the Gilded Age comes to a close, Elena Bissette’s once-wealthy family has nearly lost its fortune. The Bissettes still own a home on fashionable Mackinac Island, where they will spend one last summer in the hope of introducing Elena to a wealthy suitor. But Elena is repulsed by the idea of marrying for money.
Quickly tiring of the extravagant balls, Elena spends most evenings escaping back into Mackinac’s rugged forest. There she meets Chase, a handsome laborer who shares her love for the night sky. The two begin to meet in secret at an abandoned lighthouse, where they work together to solve a mystery buried in the pages of a tattered diary.
As Elena falls in love with Chase, her mother relentlessly contrives to introduce her to Chester Darrington, the island’s most eligible bachelor. Marriage to the elusive millionaire would solve the Bissettes’ financial woes, and Elena is torn between duty and love.
MY TAKE: Have you ever been to Mackinac Island? I’ve been supremely blessed that I have been there not once but twice. My husband is from Michigan and we actually spent some time there on our honeymoon and then visited again with our children just last year.
I have absolutely been in love with the island from the first time we visited. There is just something that is otherworldly. Melanie Dobson captures that magic wonderfully in this book. The love story between Elena and Chester is one that has you reading with bated breath; will he find out who she is before she realizes who he is? Will Elena get a happy ending or will she be forced to give up true love and marry a man who would secure her families financial status?
These are all questions that run through your mind while reading. I found my chest getting tight as my hopes for her overcame me and then in other sections I would have feelings of anger and despair for her. These are the types of books that I love, when they engulf me so much that my emotions are affected by the characters.
I highly recommend this beautiful love story and if you are ever in Michigan definitely take a trip up north and experience Mackinac for yourself. Don’t forget to have some fudge and a pasty!
